Somalia Famine

Mission

Save lives by raising awareness about the famine in Somalia through innovative marketing campaigns

Summary

Below is a list of ideas for raising awareness. The goal is to put down all the ideas we have so that we can choose an idea that will inform as many people as possible… this will indirectly lead to more donations and save lives.

Ideas

Simple Community Page

  • We create a community page on Facebook and we put links on the info section to major charities where users can then go and donate
  • On the wall we can also put links to charities…and what they are doing to help
  • We can then simply like the page ourselves
    • Our friends will then like it on their own accord or
    • We can personally message them to like it or
    • We can put a link to the "One Click One Life" page on their page and then they can choose to like it if they wish

Pros

  • Simple to do

Cons

  • This is what everyone does and this does not seem innovative
  • It does not seem that people will click "like" if they know that the only thing that they are going to get from the "One Click One Life" wall/ feed is a list of charities

Contest

  • We create a community page and on the info section we put contest details, rules ext…
  • On the wall/ feed we put a contest item which will read some like this
    • Like this link to automatically be entered in the Somalia Famine Awareness contest for a chance to win
      • Prizes
        • $100
        • Online credits to Amazon
  • The link will then go to a blog post which will give details of the prize. Bellow that we will have a standard message which will highlight what is happening in Somalia along with a list of charities that they can donate to.

Pros

  • We are not making them "like" the link out of guilt. We are appealing to their self interest… but that is ok because once they click the link they will be made aware of the cause and our job is done.

Cons

  • It is against Facebook guidelines to use the like button as a mechanism to automatically register participants (Can anyone think of a way around this) http://www.facebook.com/promotions_guidelines.php
    • Can we say by clicking like your friends are automatically entered to win... that just does not sound right
    • I (Jason) don't really think that facebook will relax it's rules for just us!!!
    • We can just go ahead and do it...until facebook shuts us down! And then we start another one...
Update What about this to get around the like button issue… we don't actually make it a contest instead we say those that like the link will be notified where the price will be buried… the first person to get there will win! It is not a contest, it is a giveaway … it is just a way for them to get notified where the treasure is! The feed updates will be simply info on what the prize is and where it is buried… once they click the link they will be given the details of the prize and accompanying every post there will be our generic awareness message. This does not violate the Facebook policy we get our message out and people who like the one click one life page will get a constant stream of info on where there is buried treasure. This is a win, win, win situation.

Misc

  • Need a picture for the One Click One Life page
  • Something that gets attention… perhaps something even funny (what do you guys think?)
Note I first used the picture of Mihag Gedi Farah however I think that it is so intense that people will simply block it out. http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1030613->somalitoddler-weighs-same-as-newborn-highlights-severe-famine
